Der Sturm (The tempest)
The Tempest is a play by Wiliam Shakespeare about storms and shipwrecks, mysteries of origin, sorcery and magic and the separation and reunion of lovers.
Prospero, former Duke of Milan and magician, lives in exile on an island with his daughter Miranda, cut off from the outside world. At his service is the air spirit Ariel, whom he once freed from a split pine tree into which the witch Sycorax had banished him. The witch’s son, Caliban, also appears to serve Prospero faithfully.
On their way back from a wedding, the Alonso family, the King of Naples, are stranded on Prospero’s island – also on board: Prospero’s brother Antonio. Miranda falls in love with the king’s son Ferdinand, he reciprocates her feelings and Prospero gives them his blessing. The wedding celebrations could actually begin, but Caliban has treachery on his mind: together with the court jester Trinculo and the cellar master Stefano, he seeks Prospero’s life – after all, he has robbed him of his rightful inheritance, the rule of the island. Prospero summons the spirits of the island, who must obey his spell.
From 8 November 2024 in eleven performances at the Schauspielhaus Salzburg.
