Nelly and Nadine
Queer Film Evening: Love Against All Odds in World War 2
The Belgian opera singer Nelly Mousset-Vos and the Chinese resistance fighter Nadine Hwang meet on Christmas Eve 1944 in Ravensbrück concentration camp, where they are both prisoners. From that moment on, the two women spend as much time together as possible. Shortly before the end of the war, they are separated for a few months, find each other again, move together to Venezuela to be able to live their love freely there, and later to Brussels.
For many years, Nelly and Nadine’s remarkable love story was kept secret, even from close family members. Now Nelly’s granddaughter Sylvie has opened the lovers’ private archive. Magnus Gertten’s touching documentary uses Nelly’s diary and photographs, love letters and film reels to tell a remarkable story about the horror of war, well-kept family secrets and love against all odds.
