Gallery in the Traklhaus

The Galerie im Traklhaus has been located in the birthplace of the poet Gerog Trakl in Salzburg’s historic city centre since 1973 and has developed into an exhibition venue for Austrian and international artists. Approximately 8 exhibitions per year are organised in three rooms covering around 180 m². The approximately 50 m² studio room is located next to the main gallery in the courtyard of the historic Traklhaus.

All areas of the visual arts are covered: from painting, drawing and printmaking to ceramics, sculptures, objects and installations, photography and video. Diversity and variety are and always have been the order of the day: younger and older artists, renowned and lesser-known, Salzburgers, Austrians and artists from all over the world and many different techniques and styles. In 1973, a research and memorial centre was established in the birthplace of Georg Trakl, Salzburg's most famous poet (1887-1914), which also hosts numerous events. The research and memorial site offers visitors a film portrait as an introduction to the poet's life and work. Manuscripts, personal documents, artefacts from the Trakl family's former home and secondary literature can be viewed as part of a guided tour. Georg Trakl was born in Salzburg in 1887, the son of an ironmonger. He lived with his family in Salzburg until the age of 21. He was only 27 when he died in the garrison hospital in Krakow at the beginning of the First World War. In just a few years, he had created a body of poetry that secured him a special place in the German-language poetry of the 20th century. Today, a total of ten poetry plaques in Salzburg bear witness to his work and his connection to the city of Mozart.
