Ian Davenport in Salzburg

With Ian Davenport, a well-known representative of the “Young British Artists” will exhibit at the Haas&Gschwandtner Gallery in Salzburg from October 1.

Ian Davenport was born in 1966 in Sidcup in the English county of Kent. He studied art at Northwich College of Art and Design and graduated from Goldsmith College at the University of London in 1988. That same year, he participated in the Freeze art exhibition in London’s Docklands, curated by Damien Hirst and considered the birth of the “YBA,” the Young British Artists. In 1991 Davenport was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize.

Ian Davenport is known for his minimalist-aesthetic formal language. His so-called “puddle paintings”, whose colors merge into puddles at the bottom of the picture, have become icons. Davenport’s works have been presented in important museums and galleries of contemporary art. These include the Tate Britain in London, the Paul Kasmin Gallery in New York, or the Art Plural Gallery in Singapore, as well as at the 57th Biennale di Venezia. In recent years, his paintings have achieved enormous increases in value – sales prices of up to 80,000 euros are now paid for large formats.

Highlight of the Salzburg Art Autumn

For the first time since 2013, the exceptional British artist Ian Davenport is showing a selection of early works from his personal archive in Salzburg at Galerie Haas&Gschwandtner. And also latest prints in the solo exhibition COLOUR EXPLOSION. Four of his typical paintings (1996 to 2001) as well as the most recent series Four Seasons (2020), which mark a new development and a significant departure from the famous “puddle paintings”, are shown with about 35 other works on almost 200 m2. Among them are four rare acrylic paintings on paper from the artist’s personal archive, created between 1996 and 2011, as well as the latest etchings and screen prints.
