Salzachgalerien

“Come, marvel, experience” is the slogan of the Salzachgalerien on the banks of the Salzach between Markartsteg and Müllner Steg. Indeed, one is reminded of the atmosphere of the art market on the Seine in Paris, which the Salzachgalerien took as a model 20 years ago. Today, the art bazaar on the Salzach, which takes place several times a summer, is a multicultural event the likes of which you wouldn’t expect to see in Salzburg. And – according to the organizers – the largest outdoor art exhibition in Austria.

Arts and crafts in a variety of forms – jewelry, paintings of different genres and colors, decorative items for the garden to fashion and textiles of different styles and designs. All this in a multicultural atmosphere on the banks of the Salzach against the magnificent backdrop of the old town.

The “Chiemgau Ideenwerkstatt” shows, for example, extraordinary decorative items that are indeed extraordinary. From materials such as tree trunks, scrap metal, moss, old musical instruments and other archaic-looking objects, Peter Heinrich designs and models figures, sculptures. Nativities and dioramas. Two-dimensional pictures can only insufficiently reflect the charisma and fascination of these objects. One has to stand in front of them and feel how the processed materials ground and create a connection to the self. The figures and objects are at times disturbing. And disturbingly attractive.

The market action is accompanied by performances of various music groups and, of course, gastro stalls, where the variety of food on offer is also partly very exotic. This year you can visit the Salzachgalerien one more time on the weekend of September 26/27 and immerse yourself in their cosmos. The next Salzachgalerien will then take place on about 8 weekends in July and August 2021.
