Arch of Hysteria
Thematic exhibition with works by Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, Max Ernst and others on the theme of “arc de ciercle”.
Under the title “Arch of Hysteria: Between Madness and Ecstasy“, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg is dedicating a large thematic exhibition to the motif of the backbend with works by Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, Alfred Kubin, Max Ernst, Louise Bourgeois, Valie Export and Robert Longo, among others. The so-called “arc de cercle”, the “great arch”, with its ambivalence between loss of control and domination, is a seductive motif that has a long tradition in art and cultural history.
Arch of Hysteria is the first exhibition to focus entirely on this visually powerful motif. Works of art from the last 100 years from different contexts show the variety of expressive possibilities inherent in the pose – up to and including its transformation into abstract, yet expressive and unmistakable forms.
