The St John Passion as a danced world premiere
At the 2024 Easter Festival, award-winning choreographer Sasha Waltz will dedicate herself for the first time to a religiously themed work of music: Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion.
In her world premiere, Sasha Waltz combines dance, choral singing, talented soloists and an orchestra for a concentrated programme at the Felsenreitschule. In her choreographyShe stages the “St John Passion” as a timeless tale about the human search for truth and justice, independent of religious references. The performance illuminates the entanglements of suffering, hope, violence and rebellion in the Passion and shows how our bodies still form surfaces today in which (in)justice is inscribed and expressed on the basis of religious values. The search for justice characterises the guiding principle of the musically narrated and danced story. In her world premiere, Waltz sees the expressive form of Bach’s music and dance as universal bridge builders and mediators of hope, especially in times of economic and political crisis.
