This year’s Whitsun Festival revolves around the works of composers Christoph Willibald Gluck, Joseph Haydn, Claudio Monteverdi and Franz Schubert.

The Whitsun Festival from 26-29 May 2023 is one of the most important classical music festivals in Europe. Under the artistic direction of Cecilia Bartoli, the programme promises to be an unforgettable experience for all fans of opera, orchestra and choral singing.

The theme of this year’s Whitsun Festival is “Les Passions de l’âme” – “The Passion of the Soul”. It is about the passion for music and the deep emotions it triggers. Accordingly, this year’s festival will feature works that exude strong emotions and drama. The opening opera on 26 May in the House for Mozart will be “Orfeo ed Euridice” by Christoph Willibald Glucki, a work full of love, pain and sorrow.

Another highlight will be the performance of the opera “L’anima del filosofo” by the Austrian composer Joseph Haydn. The story revolves around love and despair and will be presented under the direction of Gianluca Capuano.

So anyone attending the 2023 Whitsun Festival can look forward to a special musical experience. And even away from the concerts, a visit to Salzburg in spring is worthwhile. The city with its historic old town, magnificent buildings and wonderful surroundings is always worth a trip.
