Singin’ in the Rain

The golden age of Hollywood

The golden era of Hollywood on the theatre stage. The musical “Singin’ in the Rain” premieres at the Salzburg State Theatre on 2 December.

Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are the biggest silent film stars of their time and the screen couple par excellence. Away from the cinema, however, Lockwood has no feelings for his co-star. On the run from pushy fans one evening, Don makes the acquaintance of young actress Kathy Selden, in whom he quickly takes an interest. Don’s career begins to falter when a technical innovation shakes the very foundations of film – sound film. The problem: Lina’s voice is not exactly suited to being presented to a large audience. Luckily, Kathy Selden is an extremely talented speaker and singer.

“Singin’ in the Rain” is a declaration of love to the musical. “Singin’ in the Rain” is a romantic musical comedy from 1952, directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen and starring Kelly, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds as well as Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell and Cyd Charisse. Singin’ in the Rain was originally a foxtrot.

The music by Nacio Herb Brown (1896-1964) and Arthur Freed (1894 -1973) is largely from this period and was woven by Betty Comden and Adolph Green into a plot that revives the attitude to life in the dream factory.
