Idyll at the lake
18 km north of Salzburg lies Mattsee, a town in the Salzburg Lake District – ideal for relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is home to the Fahrtraum, a museum worth seeing on the history of mobility.
Mattsee, one of the three Trumer lakes, is one of the warmest bathing lakes in the province of Salzburg with a size of 3.6 square kilometres. It is characterised by particularly good water quality. The listed lido was built in 1928 in Art Nouveau style. It was the first bathing house in the province of Salzburg. You can explore Lake Mattsee on a surfboard or sailing boat, for example. Or by pedal boat, rowing boat or electric boat. The “Seenland” liner service also takes you to Seeham and Obertrum on the other two lakes.
The Ferdinand Porsche experience worlds “fahr(T)raum” are located in the municipality of Mattsee. The “fahr(T)raum” is a tribute to Ferdinand Porsche, his team and his role in the development of mobility. Numerous exhibits from Austrian automotive history are on display here, such as the Austro Daimler from 1922. All models are ready to drive and are sent out on the road for bookable trips.
The history of mobility
On the site of the former shoe factory with its own industrial charm, technology is presented in a hands-on way. The exhibition rooms are equipped with numerous interactive possibilities. Touching many of the exhibits is expressly encouraged. In this way, the history of Ferdinand Porsche and the designs of his vehicles can be understood at first hand.
An exhibition of historic tractors and agricultural machinery awaits you in the Tractor Stadl. Many people are probably not familiar with the fact that tractors were also successfully constructed and sold under the Porsche brand name, which is famous for sports cars. In the Traktor-Stadl, Allgaier and Porsche diesel models are presented together with vehicles from the Oldtimer-, Traktoren- und Landmaschinenverein Mattsee in a tractor exhibition that is reminiscent of a farm on a warm summer evening.
Since yesterday (15.05.) the gastronomy in Austria is back on track, and since today (16.05.) the driving area has also reopened. This means that the first excursions into the wonderful Salzburg lake landscape are possible again – to an idyll on the lake. You can get to Mattsee comfortably with the regional bus 120 in just under 40 minutes from Salzburg’s main railway station. And the regular timetable is now valid again.
