Salzburg Queer Update

21.04.2024 “Men?” is the title of Fabian Pichlmayr’s exhibition at Kiesel in Salzburg from 27 April. Post-impressionist paintings in search of a description of masculinity. Exciting! The vernissage is on 27 April at the Tanzschule Seifert am Kiesel.

On the same evening, Gigi LaPajette celebrates the dance into May with her Rosa Stadl. This time Betty Pearl, Trina Crystal, Mademoiselle Giselle and Sindy Sinful will be there. A look back at the last year promises good party prospects!

May then has a few highlights in store. The ESC holiday is on 11 May. A great way to celebrate in Salzburg is with the Magic Garage at the Narrencastl. Or with Wolfgang at the Dark Eagle, who is celebrating his birthday on this day. With ESC broadcast and all kinds of extras. We are excited. At the end of May, on the 26th, Gigi’s Divas will be having brunch at the arte Hotel. You should probably try to get tickets early. “You don’t have to go to Vienna or Munich. Queer life in all its diversity is right here in Salzburg,” says Louise from QueKuSa, the new association that not only provides a framework for the growing success of the Magic Garage, but also further inspiration for queer culture in Salzburg.

30.03.2024 The Skipride 2024 starts in Zell am See/Kaprun in eleven days’ time today. A long weekend of skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier. Plus three nights of partying and an international gay audience – with a high flirt factor! . It all starts on Wednesday, 10 April at 10 pm. That’s when a coach departs from Cologne. It will make stops in Frankfurt, Würzburg and Munich and is expected in Kaprun at around 9 am on 11 April.

20.03.2024 The human rights city of Salzburg is committed to diversity and openness. This is unlikely to change significantly over the next five years following the municipal and mayoral elections the Sunday before last. The election has been decided to the extent that the SPÖ and KPÖ candidates will go into the run-off next Sunday (24 March). So it is with some relief (see article from 14 February) that we look forward to the next highlights in the city’s cultural and queer calendar.

Since 2023, the Easter Festival has included two new artistic disciplines in its programme. Electronic music and dance. On 28 March, DJ Max Cooper will transform the Felsenreitschule into a sea of sounds and lights. In 2022, Max Cooper immersed the Acropolis in Athens in a spectacular ambience. We can’t wait to see how the Felsenreitschule with its large stage and arcades carved into the rock will look with Sound&Light.

Also as part of the 2024 Easter Festival, the award-winning choreographer Sasha Waltz will dedicate herself to a religiously-influenced musical work for the first time on 22 March: Johann Sebastian Bach’s St John Passion. Also at the Felsenreitschule.

Parallel to the Easter Festival, the next Art&Antique will take place in the Residenz. Austrian and international galleries show a very broad spectrum of artistic creation. The contrast to the centuries-old architecture of the Residenz is hard to beat. And while we’re on the subject of history: The next queer city tour with Roman Forisch starts on 6 April. Two interesting hours in which you can learn a lot about historical and presumed or confirmed homosexual personalities and their work in the city of Mozart. And next Saturday (23 March), Gigi La Pajette invites you to porn karaoke at the Dark Eagle.

14.02.2024 “We will turn off this rainbow circus”, says FPÖ top candidate Paul Dürnberger in an interview with the Salzburger Nachrichten on 5 February, referring to the mayoral and municipal council elections in Salzburg on 10 March 2024. Crude positions are expressed in this interview. “There will be no rainbow flags or same-sex traffic lights with us. We stand for a classic family image.” It goes without saying that all funding for LGBT and cultural institutions such as the Sead or Jazzit should be cancelled.

In a four-week-old poll, however, FPÖ candidate Dürnberger only scores 10-12%, which is reassuring given the views expressed in the interview. Nevertheless, all eligible voters should fulfil their civic duties on 10 March and make use of their right to vote. As we can read in the above-mentioned interview, Salzburg would very likely lose its cosmopolitan and liberal flair with an FPÖ city government, a flair for which we love this city so much. So: if you can, please go and vote on 10 March!

1.01.2024 The star shooting on New Year’s Eve is a tradition that is only practised in the provincial capital and in Flachgau and Tennengau. It starts at 3 pm in the most remote areas of the participating districts. The shots gradually come closer and closer, forming an ever tighter circle around the city of Salzburg. Finally, the shots ring out from the mountains of the city of Salzburg and reach their climax at 4.15 pm from the Staatsbrücke. At midnight, despite the rain and cold wind, many people spread out along the Salzach between the bridges to welcome in the New Year with rockets.

The gaysalzburg.at team wishes all users a happy 2024. We look forward to an exciting queer and cultural year in our favourite city, the stage of the world – also for gays, lesbians and trans people. Peter Goebel (editor), Florian Niederseer (editor), Carina Karolus (photos).
